Have you ever heard of the Danish word/concept called “Hygge?” It is a Danish philosophy that celebrates Winter. From visitdenmark.com, hygge is: “creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.” I have mentioned in the past that I dread Winter, but as of last year, I have begun to not only embrace these snowy and cold months, but I’ve learned how to look forward to and enjoy them.
Hygge may sound (and look) a bit strange in a blog about fitness, but fitness is a big part of my reversal in attitude. In anticipation of the snowstorm yesterday, I had already pulled out my yak traks and snowshoes! As the snow began to sprinkle down, I quickly pulled on the snowshoes and took off down my country road, burning almost 800 calories before lunch! I look forward to exploring more nearby hiking trails in the next few weeks.
Another way that I am fending off the dreary blues is by dancing! I have very recently decided to become a Jazzercise instructor. Jazzercise is not only a fun cardio dance workout, it is a very effective calorie burner. I also find their new strength training interval classes (called Flip Fusion) and other strength sessions to be quite challenging. I can’t wait to learn these routines and motivate more people after I am certified in February.
Hygge isn’t just about fitness. It is about celebrating lights, the warmth of good friendships and the beginning of new Winter traditions. I love to burn candles, enjoy sparkling white lights, crochet, read books, snuggle with my doggie and watch classic movies. I look forward to spending time with my family and friends. Last, I will spend time planning and dreaming about our family’s Winter escape in February to the Grand Canyon! Hygge is now a way of life for me.
From my candlelit home to yours, Happy Holidays!
